Confirming Your Pregnancy and First Steps
If you suspect you are pregnant, the first step is professional confirmation. While home pregnancy kits are convenient, a clinic visit provides certainty and initiates your antenatal care. At Klinik Muhibbah, pregnancy testing includes urine hCG testing and blood test (beta-hCG) if needed. Once confirmed, your doctor will calculate your estimated due date (EDD) based on your last menstrual period (LMP) and start your antenatal care plan. Early pregnancy is critical — the first 12 weeks are when major organ development occurs. Your doctor will prescribe folic acid (to prevent neural tube defects), iron supplements (anaemia is common in Malaysian pregnancies), and provide dietary guidance. Avoid alcohol completely, limit caffeine, stop smoking, and discuss any medications you take. Your first ultrasound, ideally at 8-12 weeks, confirms the pregnancy location, viability, and accurate dating.

Antenatal Schedule and What to Expect
The Malaysian Ministry of Health recommends a structured antenatal visit schedule. First trimester (weeks 1-12): initial registration, blood tests (blood group, Rh factor, FBC, VDRL, HIV, hepatitis B), urine test, and first ultrasound. Second trimester (weeks 13-28): monthly visits to check blood pressure, urine, fundal height, and fetal heartbeat. The anatomy scan at 18-22 weeks checks baby development. Third trimester (weeks 29-36): fortnightly visits with increased monitoring. Blood tests may be repeated. Your doctor checks baby's position and growth. Final weeks (weeks 37-40): weekly visits until delivery. Growth monitoring, baby position check, and delivery planning. At Klinik Muhibbah, antenatal care is available — please call for current pricing for the initial registration package. Each subsequent visit is charged per consultation. Our 4D ultrasound allows you to see your baby in real-time. While we provide antenatal care, deliveries are handled at hospitals — we coordinate closely with Hospital Sultanah Aminah and private hospitals for seamless care continuity.

Essential Blood Tests During Pregnancy
Several blood tests are mandatory or highly recommended during pregnancy. Blood group and Rh typing determines if you are Rh negative, which requires special management to prevent complications. Full Blood Count detects anaemia — common in pregnancy due to increased blood volume. Haemoglobin below 11 g/dL needs iron supplementation. VDRL screens for syphilis, which can harm the baby if untreated. HIV screening protects the baby through timely intervention if positive. Hepatitis B status determines whether the baby needs vaccination at birth. Blood sugar screening (OGTT) at 24-28 weeks detects gestational diabetes — Malaysia has high rates due to dietary habits. If the OGTT is abnormal, dietary management and monitoring begin immediately. Urine tests at every visit check for protein (preeclampsia sign) and sugar (gestational diabetes marker). Additional tests may include thalassemia screening, rubella immunity, and thyroid function based on your doctor's assessment and risk factors.

Nutrition and Lifestyle During Pregnancy
Good nutrition during pregnancy supports baby development and maternal health. Calorie needs increase modestly — about 300 extra calories per day in the second and third trimesters, equivalent to a glass of milk and a banana. Focus on quality over quantity. Essential nutrients: iron (red meat, spinach, fortified cereals), calcium (milk, yoghurt, ikan bilis), folic acid (green vegetables, legumes, fortified bread), DHA omega-3 (fish — salmon, sardines), and protein (lean meats, eggs, tofu, legumes). Malaysian food considerations: limit raw or undercooked food (including raw fish in sushi), wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, ensure eggs and meats are fully cooked. Reduce intake of high-mercury fish (shark, swordfish, king mackerel). Limit kopi-o to 1-2 cups daily. Exercise during pregnancy is safe and recommended — walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga are excellent. Avoid contact sports, heavy lifting, and exercises lying flat on your back after 20 weeks. Stay well-hydrated in Malaysia's hot climate — aim for 8-10 glasses of water daily.

Warning Signs During Pregnancy
While most pregnancies proceed normally, know the warning signs that require immediate medical attention. Vaginal bleeding at any stage — could indicate miscarriage, placenta previa, or other complications. Severe headache with visual disturbances and swelling — possible preeclampsia. Sudden severe abdominal pain. Reduced or no fetal movement after 28 weeks — if you notice significantly less movement, contact your doctor or go to hospital. Water breaking (clear fluid leaking) — go to hospital especially if before 37 weeks. Regular contractions before 37 weeks — possible premature labour. Fever above 38 degrees C. Persistent vomiting preventing food or fluid intake. Swelling of face and hands (not just feet). Burning or pain during urination with fever. Do not hesitate to seek medical help for any concern — it is always better to be checked and reassured than to wait with a potentially serious complication. At Klinik Muhibbah, we encourage all our antenatal patients to contact us for any pregnancy-related concern during our operating hours.
