Chickenpox Vaccine (Varicella) in Johor Bahru

Vaksin Cacar Air (Varicella)

Klinik Muhibbah provides chickenpox (varicella) vaccination for children and adults who have not had natural chickenpox infection. The varicella vaccine prevents chickenpox and significantly reduces the risk of developing painful shingles (herpes zoster) in later life. Adults who have never had chickenpox are at risk of severe illness and should be vaccinated. The vaccine is given as 2 doses spaced 4-8 weeks apart for adolescents and adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need the chickenpox vaccine if chickenpox is common?
Yes, vaccination is strongly recommended even though chickenpox is common. Natural infection causes significant illness, school absence, and rare but serious complications including bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, and death. The vaccine prevents the disease and also reduces lifetime risk of shingles. Please call for current vaccine pricing.
Can adults get the chickenpox vaccine at Klinik Muhibbah?
Yes, adults who have never had chickenpox or who are unsure of their history should be vaccinated — adults tend to have more severe chickenpox than children. Two doses are given 4-8 weeks apart. A varicella antibody blood test can be done first to check if you are already immune from past unrecognised infection.
Does getting the chickenpox vaccine prevent shingles in later life?
Yes, by preventing varicella infection, the vaccine also prevents the virus from staying dormant in nerve cells and reactivating as shingles. Vaccinated individuals who do later develop shingles tend to have milder disease. For adults over 50 who already had chickenpox, a specific shingles vaccine (Shingrix) is available through specialist referral.
