Malaysia National Immunisation Programme
The Malaysian National Immunisation Programme (NIP/EPI) provides free vaccinations for children at government health clinics (klinik kesihatan). The schedule covers protection against major diseases: BCG at birth (tuberculosis), Hepatitis B at birth, 1 month, and 6 months, DTaP-IPV-Hib at 2, 3, 5, and 18 months (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, Haemophilus influenzae), Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) at 9 and 12 months, and Japanese Encephalitis at 9 and 10 months (in Sarawak). Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) was added to the NIP in 2020 at 2, 4, and 12 months. These government vaccinations are free and highly recommended. Missing any doses increases your child's risk of serious preventable diseases. At Klinik Muhibbah, we can administer catch-up vaccinations if any scheduled doses have been missed, and provide the government-schedule vaccines for families who prefer a private clinic setting.

Additional Recommended Vaccines for Children
Beyond the government schedule, several optional vaccines provide additional protection. Influenza (flu) vaccine: recommended annually for children over 6 months, especially those in childcare. The flu virus changes yearly, requiring annual re-vaccination. Hepatitis A vaccine: protects against a liver infection commonly transmitted through contaminated food and water. Recommended for children over 12 months, given as two doses 6 months apart. Meningococcal vaccine: protects against bacterial meningitis. Particularly important for children in group settings. Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine: recommended at 12 months with a booster at 4-6 years. While chickenpox is often mild, it can cause serious complications in some children. Rotavirus vaccine: given orally at 2 and 4 months, protects against severe diarrhoea. These optional vaccines are available at private clinics like Klinik Muhibbah. Discuss with your doctor which additional vaccines are most relevant for your child based on their risk factors and lifestyle.

Adult Vaccinations: Not Just for Children
Many adults are under-vaccinated, leaving them vulnerable to preventable diseases. Influenza vaccine is recommended annually for everyone, especially adults over 50, healthcare workers, pregnant women, and those with chronic diseases. The flu can be serious in adults — it is not just a bad cold. Hepatitis B booster may be needed if your immunity has waned since childhood vaccination. A blood test can check your antibody levels. Tetanus booster is recommended every 10 years, and after any wound contaminated with soil or rust. HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine prevents cervical cancer and is recommended for women up to age 26, and males up to age 21, though it can benefit adults up to 45. Pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for adults over 65 and those with chronic diseases. Herpes zoster (shingles) vaccine is recommended for adults over 50. Travel vaccines (typhoid, meningococcal, yellow fever) may be needed depending on your destination. At Klinik Muhibbah, our doctors can review your vaccination history and recommend which adult vaccines you need.

Vaccine Safety and Common Concerns
Vaccines are among the safest and most thoroughly tested medical interventions. Common side effects are mild and temporary: pain or redness at the injection site, low-grade fever (37.5-38 degrees C) for 1-2 days, mild fussiness in babies, and fatigue. These are normal signs that the immune system is responding. Serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) are extremely rare — approximately 1 in a million doses — which is why clinics observe patients for 15-20 minutes after vaccination. Vaccines do not cause autism — this has been conclusively disproven by extensive research involving millions of children. Vaccines do not weaken the immune system — they train it. Natural immunity from disease comes at the cost of illness, hospitalisation risk, and potential death. Vaccine-derived immunity achieves the same protection safely. If your child is mildly unwell (runny nose, mild cold), vaccination can usually still proceed. Delay vaccination only for moderate to severe illness with fever. Your doctor at Klinik Muhibbah will assess your child before vaccination and address any specific concerns.

Where to Get Vaccinated in Johor
Several options exist for vaccination in Johor Bahru. Government klinik kesihatan provides free NIP vaccines for children — excellent but often involves long waiting times. Hospital vaccination clinics offer comprehensive vaccine inventories but at higher prices. Private clinics like Klinik Muhibbah offer a comfortable middle ground — shorter wait times, flexible scheduling, and competitive pricing. When choosing a vaccination provider, ensure they maintain proper cold chain storage (vaccines must be refrigerated at specific temperatures), use single-use needles (never shared between patients), provide vaccination records and documentation, and observe you or your child for 15-20 minutes post-vaccination. At Klinik Muhibbah, all vaccines are stored in dedicated medical refrigerators with temperature monitoring. We maintain complete vaccination records and can issue vaccination certificates for school, travel, or employment purposes. Contact us at +60 7-251 1162 / +60 7-252 1162 to check vaccine availability and schedule your appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.
