How to Prepare

No fasting is required for blood tumour markers. Schedule the clinical breast examination 1–2 weeks after your period when breast tissue is least tender. Inform the doctor of any family history of breast or ovarian cancer, BRCA gene carrier status if known, any recent breast changes (lump, skin changes, nipple discharge), or previous breast investigations.

How often should Malaysian women screen for breast cancer?▼
Annual mammogram is recommended from age 40. For women aged 40–49, discuss frequency with your doctor based on breast density and risk factors. Breast self-examination monthly and clinical breast examination annually are recommended from age 25. Women with BRCA gene mutations or strong family history should begin earlier and more frequently — our doctors can advise on a personalised plan.
Can blood tests detect breast cancer early?▼
CA 15-3 is a breast cancer tumour marker used for monitoring known breast cancer and screening in women at risk. It is not sensitive enough to be a standalone screening test in the general population but is valuable as part of a comprehensive screening approach alongside clinical examination and mammography. An abnormal CA 15-3 warrants urgent further investigation.
