Lung Cancer Screening in Johor Bahru

Saringan Kanser Paru-Paru

Lung cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in Malaysia — largely because it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Klinik Muhibbah provides lung cancer risk assessment, blood-based screening with CEA and CYFRA 21-1 tumour markers, chest X-Ray evaluation, and referral for low-dose CT scan (LDCT) for high-risk individuals such as smokers aged 50 and above. Early detection through screening significantly improves survival outcomes. Our doctors also counsel on smoking cessation as the most effective lung cancer prevention strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should get lung cancer screening in Malaysia?
Lung cancer screening is recommended for current or former smokers aged 50–80 who have smoked at least 20 pack-years (1 pack per day for 20 years, or equivalent). It is also advised for those with significant occupational exposures (asbestos, silica, diesel fumes) and those with first-degree relatives with lung cancer. Symptoms such as persistent cough, blood-stained sputum, or unexplained weight loss should be evaluated urgently.
Is a chest X-Ray enough to screen for lung cancer?
Chest X-Ray can detect lung tumours but misses many early cancers, especially small lesions. Low-dose CT scan (LDCT) is the gold standard for lung cancer screening in high-risk individuals — it detects tumours up to 10 times smaller than X-Ray can. Our doctors will assess your risk level and recommend whether LDCT referral is warranted based on your smoking history and risk factors.
Can stopping smoking reduce my lung cancer risk?
Yes, significantly. Lung cancer risk decreases progressively after quitting smoking. After 10 years of abstinence, risk drops to about half that of a continuing smoker. Klinik Muhibbah provides smoking cessation support including NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) prescriptions, varenicline (Champix) counselling, and behavioural support. It is never too late to quit.
