How to Prepare

📝

Keep a sleep diary for 1–2 weeks before your appointment recording bedtime, wake time, number of awakenings, and daytime sleepiness. Ask your bed partner about any observed snoring, gasping, or breathing pauses during sleep. Bring a list of all current medications (some worsen sleep). Inform the doctor of any anxiety, depression, or chronic pain as these commonly disrupt sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in Malaysia?
OSA is very common in Malaysia, particularly among overweight middle-aged men. Key symptoms include loud habitual snoring, observed pauses in breathing during sleep (reported by a partner), waking with a choking sensation, unrefreshing sleep despite adequate hours, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, and poor concentration. High-risk patients include those with large neck circumference, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes.
Do I need a sleep study to diagnose sleep apnoea?
A polysomnography (sleep study) is the gold standard for diagnosing OSA and other sleep disorders. Our doctors can identify high-risk patients using clinical screening tools and refer directly to a sleep laboratory in Johor Bahru. For patients with very high clinical probability of OSA, home sleep testing may be arranged as an alternative to in-laboratory polysomnography in some cases.
Can a GP manage sleep problems or do I need a specialist?
Our GPs at Klinik Muhibbah can manage common sleep disorders including mild to moderate insomnia, circadian rhythm disruption, restless legs syndrome, and anxiety-related sleep problems. We prescribe melatonin, short-term sleep aids where appropriate, and address underlying conditions (thyroid, anaemia, depression) causing poor sleep. Moderate to severe OSA, narcolepsy, and complex sleep disorders are referred to a pulmonologist or sleep medicine specialist.
