Folliculitis (Infected Hair Follicles) Treatment in Johor Bahru

Folikulitis (Jangkitan Folikel Rambut)

Folliculitis is inflammation or infection of hair follicles, presenting as small red or white pus-filled bumps (pustules) around hair shafts. It can affect any hair-bearing area of the body. In Malaysia, heat, humidity, sweating, friction from clothing, and shaving are common triggers. Most cases are caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, but fungal folliculitis (Malassezia) is also common. Hot tub or pool folliculitis (Pseudomonas) may follow exposure to inadequately chlorinated water. Most cases are mild and treatable.

Symptoms of Folliculitis (Infected Hair Follicles)

Small red bumps or white-headed pimples around hair follicles
Itching, burning, or tenderness of affected skin
Pus-filled blisters that may burst
Most common areas: scalp, face, neck, armpits, buttocks, thighs
Skin that remains sore or crusty after pustules burst
In severe cases: large, painful boils (furuncles)

⚠️ When to See a Doctor

See a doctor if folliculitis is widespread, not improving after a week of self-care, is accompanied by fever or expanding redness, or if large painful boils develop. Recurrent folliculitis may indicate an underlying cause such as diabetes or immune suppression.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is folliculitis contagious?
Bacterial folliculitis caused by Staphylococcus can be mildly contagious through skin-to-skin contact or sharing towels and razors. Hot tub folliculitis from Pseudomonas spreads in shared water. Fungal folliculitis is not considered contagious. Avoid sharing personal items during active infection.
What is the difference between folliculitis and a boil?
Folliculitis involves small superficial pustules around multiple hair follicles. A boil (furuncle) is a deeper, more painful abscess within a single hair follicle, often requiring incision and drainage. Our doctors at Klinik Muhibbah assess and treat both conditions.
