C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Blood Test in Johor Bahru

Ujian Darah C-Reactive Protein (CRP)

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a sensitive blood marker of inflammation produced by the liver in response to infection, tissue injury, or chronic inflammatory disease. Klinik Muhibbah offers both standard CRP and high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) testing. Standard CRP detects significant acute inflammation from infections or autoimmune flares, while hs-CRP measures low-grade chronic inflammation linked to cardiovascular disease risk. CRP is a valuable tool in diagnosing infection severity, monitoring inflammatory conditions, and assessing cardiovascular risk.

What's Included

CRP (standard) blood test
High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) for cardiovascular risk
ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) — paired inflammatory marker
Full blood count (FBC) to assess for infection or anaemia
Doctor consultation and result interpretation
Clinical correlation with symptoms and diagnosis
Follow-up monitoring if treating an inflammatory condition

How to Prepare

📝

No fasting is strictly required for CRP testing. However, for hs-CRP cardiovascular risk assessment, avoid vigorous exercise and ensure you are not currently unwell with an acute infection as both can elevate CRP significantly and make the result uninterpretable for cardiovascular risk purposes. Inform the doctor of any current symptoms of infection, joint pain, or known inflammatory conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a high CRP level mean?
A high standard CRP (above 10 mg/L) indicates significant active inflammation or infection — such as bacterial infection, autoimmune flare, or post-surgical inflammation. A mildly elevated hs-CRP (1–3 mg/L) in an otherwise healthy person indicates low-grade chronic inflammation associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk. Our doctors interpret CRP in the context of your symptoms and clinical picture.
When is CRP testing used at Klinik Muhibbah?
CRP is useful when a patient has fever and our doctor needs to assess infection severity and decide on antibiotic treatment. It is also used to monitor response to treatment in infections or inflammatory conditions, to screen for hidden inflammation in patients with unexplained symptoms, and as part of cardiovascular risk assessment alongside cholesterol and blood pressure.
What is the difference between ESR and CRP as inflammatory markers?
Both ESR and CRP rise with inflammation, but CRP rises faster (within hours of an acute event) and falls more quickly when inflammation resolves. ESR is a slower, less specific marker that reflects longer-term inflammation. CRP is generally preferred for acute assessment while ESR is useful for monitoring chronic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and temporal arteritis. Our doctors often order both together for a comprehensive picture.
