Men's Health Guide Malaysia: Blood Tests, Screening & What to Check at 40+

Panduan Kesihatan Lelaki Malaysia: Ujian Darah, Saringan & Apa Yang Perlu Diperiksa

Malaysian men are significantly less likely than women to visit a doctor, attend health screenings, or seek help for health concerns — yet men die on average 5 years earlier. This guide covers the blood tests and screenings every Malaysian man should prioritise, starting from age 40. Topics include PSA for prostate health, testosterone levels, cardiovascular risk screening, testicular self-examination, and how to overcome the cultural barriers that keep men away from healthcare.

1

Why Malaysian Men Avoid the Doctor

Studies consistently show that men, particularly in Asian cultures, delay seeking medical care. Common reasons include the belief that illness is a sign of weakness, fear of receiving bad news, assuming symptoms will resolve on their own, embarrassment about discussing certain health concerns, and being too busy with work. The result is that conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and prostate disease are frequently diagnosed late — when treatment is less effective and outcomes worse. The practical reality: a health screening takes 60 to 90 minutes once a year. The investment is minimal compared to the years of quality life it can protect. Early detection of high blood pressure, for example, means starting a simple daily tablet rather than dealing with a stroke years later. At Klinik Muhibbah, our doctors understand these concerns and create a non-judgmental environment for men's health discussions. Book at movo-x.com/kiosk/muhibbah.

Essential Blood Tests for Men at 40+

From age 40, men should have an annual blood panel covering the following. Fasting Blood Sugar and HbA1c: Malaysia has one of the highest diabetes rates in Asia and men are at higher metabolic risk due to visceral fat accumulation. Many diabetic men have no symptoms for years. Lipid Profile (Total Cholesterol, LDL, HDL, Triglycerides): cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of Malaysian men. LDL drives arterial plaque. Target LDL below 3.4 mmol/L for healthy men, below 2.6 for those with diabetes or risk factors. Full Blood Count: screens for anaemia, infection, and blood disorders. Low haemoglobin in men (below 13.5 g/dL) warrants investigation for chronic disease or gastrointestinal bleeding. Liver Function Test: fatty liver disease is very common in men with central obesity. Alcohol consumption and certain supplements can also elevate liver enzymes silently. Kidney Function and Uric Acid: gout affects men far more than women. High uric acid and kidney disease frequently coexist. Early detection protects kidney health. PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen): for men 50 and over, or 40 with family history of prostate cancer. Discusses in detail in the next section. Thyroid Function (TSH): hypothyroidism causes fatigue, weight gain, and depression — often dismissed as "just stress" in working men.

PSA and Prostate Health: What Every Man Over 50 Needs to Know

The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder and produces seminal fluid. Prostate conditions are among the most common health issues for older Malaysian men. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): the prostate normally enlarges with age. By age 60, over half of men have some degree of BPH. Symptoms include: needing to urinate frequently (especially at night — nocturia), weak urine stream, difficulty starting urination, and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. Not life-threatening but significantly impacts quality of life. Treatable with medications or procedures. Prostate Cancer: the fifth most common cancer in Malaysian men. Often has no symptoms in early stages — this is why PSA screening matters. PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a blood protein produced by the prostate. Elevated PSA (above 4.0 ng/mL) triggers further investigation. PSA can also be elevated by BPH, prostatitis, and urinary tract infections — so a raised PSA is not a diagnosis of cancer, but it warrants investigation with ultrasound and possibly biopsy. Who should discuss PSA screening: men over 50; men over 40 with a family history of prostate cancer or of African descent. At Klinik Muhibbah, PSA testing is available — please call for current pricing. Book at movo-x.com/kiosk/muhibbah.

Testosterone and Hormonal Health

Testosterone levels decline gradually from around age 30 onwards — approximately 1 to 2% per year. By age 50, many men have measurably lower testosterone levels, and some develop symptoms of low testosterone (hypogonadism or "andropause"). Symptoms of low testosterone: - Reduced energy and persistent fatigue - Reduced libido and sexual function - Loss of muscle mass and increased body fat, particularly around the abdomen - Mood changes: irritability, depression, difficulty concentrating - Reduced bone density (osteoporosis risk) - Sleep disturbances Important: these symptoms overlap significantly with diabetes, hypothyroidism, depression, and sleep apnoea. Do not self-diagnose low testosterone — a blood test (total testosterone, best measured between 8 and 10AM when levels peak) is needed for accurate assessment. If testosterone is genuinely low (below 8 to 12 nmol/L depending on symptoms), testosterone replacement therapy may be considered after evaluation. However, it is not suitable for everyone and requires monitoring. At Klinik Muhibbah, testosterone testing is available as part of a men's health panel. Discuss your symptoms honestly with our doctors.

Testicular Self-Examination and Cardiovascular Risk

Testicular Self-Examination (TSE): testicular cancer is the most common solid cancer in men aged 15 to 35. It is highly curable when detected early — over 95% survival when found at Stage 1. Monthly TSE takes less than 5 minutes. How to perform TSE: - Best done during or after a warm shower when scrotal skin is relaxed - Gently roll each testicle between thumb and fingers - Feel for any hard lumps, changes in size or shape, or areas of tenderness that were not present before - The epididymis (the soft, tube-like structure at the back of each testicle) is normal — do not mistake it for a lump - Report any new lump or change to a doctor promptly — do not wait to "see if it goes away" Cardiovascular Risk in Malaysian Men: Malaysian men have significantly higher rates of early heart disease compared to global averages. Risk factors include: diabetes (metabolic syndrome is very common), hypertension, smoking (Malaysia has a high male smoking rate), abdominal obesity, high LDL and low HDL cholesterol, and physical inactivity. From age 40, an ECG should be part of your annual check if you have two or more cardiovascular risk factors. At Klinik Muhibbah, ECG is available — please call for current pricing. Complete men's health packages including all relevant blood tests, ECG, and doctor consultation are available. Book at movo-x.com/kiosk/muhibbah.

Start annual health screening from age 35 to 40. If you have a family history of diabetes, heart disease, or cancer, start at age 30. PSA testing should be discussed with your doctor from age 50, or age 40 with family history of prostate cancer.
Can I get a PSA test at Klinik Muhibbah?
Yes. PSA testing is available at Klinik Muhibbah in Masai. Please call for current pricing. Walk in during operating hours (Mon–Thu & Sat 9AM–9PM, Fri 9AM–3PM, Sun 9AM–1PM) or book at movo-x.com/kiosk/muhibbah.
